Grade 2 Weekly Classroom Update -5.29.2026

 πŸŒŸ Grade 2 Weekly Classroom Update 🌟

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We had another wonderful week of learning, creativity, and discovery in Grade 2! Students explored poetry, completed important research writing, strengthened their math skills, and learned more about communities and government.


πŸ“š Language Arts – Poetry & Frog Research

This week, students continued their poetry unit and learned several poetry techniques, including:

  • 🎡 Repetition – repeating words or phrases for effect
  • 🎢 Rhyming – words that sound alike
  • Alliteration – words that begin with the same sound

Students used these tools to write their own poems inspired by topics that give them “big feelings.”

We also continued our Frog Research Project by researching and writing about:

  • πŸ”„ Frog life cycles
  • 🀩 Interesting frog facts
  • 🐸 Final published research writing

Students worked hard to turn their research into organized and informative writing pieces.


πŸ”’ Math – Addition & Subtraction Strategies

In Math, students:

  • ➕ Practiced addition using the Hundreds Chart strategy
  • ➖ Practiced subtraction using the Hundreds Chart strategy
  • 🧠 Solved word problems
  • πŸ“ Strengthened their number sense with double-digit numbers

Students continued building confidence by using the hundreds chart to find patterns, count efficiently, and explain their mathematical thinking.


🐣 Science – Life Cycle Observation

Students participated in a special egg candling observation as part of our chicken life cycle learning. This hands-on experience allowed students to observe development inside an egg and make connections to our life cycle studies.


🌍 Social Studies – Government & Elections

Students continued learning about:

  • πŸ—³️ Elections
  • πŸ‘¨‍πŸ’Ό Community leaders such as mayors, premiers, and prime ministers

Students reflected on their learning through journal activities and class discussions.


🦘 About Me Bin – Australia

Our About Me Bin journey took us to Australia this week! πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί

Students learned about Australian culture, geography, animals, traditions, and family connections while continuing to celebrate the diverse backgrounds represented in our classroom community.

The Principal and Assistant Principal from Alex Munro School will be visiting Northern Lights School to meet students who will be attending Alex Munro next year.

🌟 Grade 2 Weekly Update 🌟

Hello Grade 2 Families,

We had another wonderful week full of learning, creativity, and fun in Grade 2! πŸ’™

πŸ“š Literacy

  • Students continued participating in literacy stations and daily UFLI reading activities.
  • We explored poetry writing and learned how poets use “big feelings” in their writing. 
  • Students also continued their frog research projects, learning about frog life cycles, diets, and planning informational writing pieces.

➕ Math

  • In math, students practiced double-digit addition and subtraction using number lines, stacking strategies, and word problems.

🌎 Social Studies & Culture

  • Students learned about Canada’s three levels of government through sorting activities and classroom discussions.
  • We also celebrated our Multicultural Day Fashion Parade! Thank you for helping students celebrate and share their cultures and identities.
  • This week’s About Me Bin focus was England! Students enjoyed learning about traditions and culture.

🌱 Outdoor Learning

  • Students participated in outdoor seed planting and continued learning about spring growth and nature.

πŸ€– Read Aloud

  • We continued enjoying our class novel, The Wild Robot, during Read and Doodle time.

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We had another wonderful week of learning, creativity, inquiry, and collaboration in Grade 2! Students explored poetry, continued their frog research projects, strengthened their math skills, and deepened their understanding of global communities.


πŸ“š Language Arts – Poetry & Frog Research

This week, students began exploring the exciting world of poetry! ✨

We learned about:

  • πŸ“ Parts of a poem
  • 🎡 Rhyming words using Old Roger
  • πŸ‘€ A “Poet’s Eye” and using imagination
  • ❤️ Big feelings in poetry

Students also continued their engaging frog research projects 🐸 by researching:

  • Appearance
  • Life cycle
  • Habitat

They practiced planning, organizing ideas, and turning research into complete writing pieces.


πŸ”’ Math – Number Line Addition & Subtraction

In Math, students practiced:

  • ➕ Addition on number lines
  • ➖ Subtraction on number lines
  • πŸ”’ Larger range double-digit numbers

Students also completed a math assessment this week and continued building confidence explaining their mathematical thinking.


🌍 Social Studies – International Trade

Students continued learning about:

  • 🌎 International trade
  • 🚒 Imports and exports
  • 🀝 How countries meet their needs

They worked on their International Trading Journals and reflected on how countries trade goods and services around the world.


🧺 About Me Bin – Guyana

Our About Me Bin learning led us to explore Guyana πŸ‡¬πŸ‡Ύ this week! Students enjoyed learning about the country’s culture, connections, and traditions while celebrating the diversity within our classroom community.

 πŸŒŸ Grade 2 Weekly Classroom Update 🌟

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We had another exciting week full of inquiry, creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning in Grade 2! Students continued building their understanding across literacy, math, and social studies through engaging activities and discussions.


πŸ“š Language Arts – Frog Research

This week, students continued their exciting frog research projects! 🐸

We explored:

  • 🍽 Frog diets
  • πŸ”„ Frog life cycles
  • πŸ‘€ Frog appearance

Students practiced:

  • Planning and organizing ideas
  • Writing first drafts
  • Using research to answer questions
  • Sharing information clearly

It has been wonderful seeing students grow in confidence as young researchers and writers!


πŸ”’ Math – Base 10 & Decomposing Numbers

In Math, students worked with:

  • 🧱 Base 10 blocks for addition and subtraction
  • ✏️ Drawing tens and ones
  • 🧠 Decomposing numbers to solve addition problems

Students also continued strengthening their mathematical thinking through:

  • πŸ” Esti-Mysteries
  • πŸ—£ Explaining strategies and reasoning

🌍 Social Studies – Needs, Wants & Trade

Our Social Studies learning focused on:

  • 🏠 Community needs and wants
  • 🌎 Imports and exports
  • 🀝 What trade is and why countries trade

Students created their own international trading cards and participated in a very exciting Class Trading Game! Students worked in groups to trade goods between countries using different transportation methods like:

  • 🚚 Trucks
  • 🚒 Ships
  • ✈️ Airplanes

Students loved taking on roles such as:

  • Speaker
  • Recorder
  • Manager
  • Reporter

This was an amazing hands-on way to explore global connections and problem-solving.


🎨 Art – Mother’s Day Flowers

Students created beautiful Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired flower art for Mother’s Day. 🌸
Their artwork was vibrant, creative, and full of thoughtful detail.

 πŸŒŸ Grade 2 Weekly Classroom Update 🌟

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We had another exciting and engaging week filled with hands-on learning, creativity, and collaboration! Here’s a look at what we explored in our classroom.


πŸ”¬ Mad Science & Food Discovery Workshop

We kicked off the week with our Mad Science in-school field trip, where students participated in fun, hands-on experiments and explored scientific concepts in an engaging way.

Later in the week, students also took part in a Food Discovery Workshop, where they learned about food, nutrition, and healthy choices. It was a fantastic interactive experience!


πŸ“š Language Arts – Writing & Research

In Language Arts, students worked on a variety of writing and reading skills:

  • πŸ‰ Dragon Writing – making connections and building detailed ideas
  • ✏️ Stretching sentences using adverbs to add more detail
  • 🐸 Frog Research – learning about appearance and habitat

Students are continuing to grow as writers by adding more detail and organizing their ideas clearly.


πŸ”’ Math – Building Number Sense

In Math, students explored numbers in a hands-on way:

  • πŸ”’ Base 10 blocks to build and represent numbers
  • 🎲 “Roll it, Build it, Draw it” activities
  • πŸ” Creating and solving their own Esti-Mystery questions

These activities help students deepen their understanding of place value and problem-solving.


🌍 Social Studies – Culture & Community

Students continued learning about:

  • 🦬 MΓ©tis heritage and art
  • πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Francophone communities in Canada

These lessons support students in understanding identity, community, and how people live in different ways.


🌍 Totes About Me

Our Totes About Me journey continues to take us around the world! This week, our learning led us to Syria.

Students explored:

  • Cultural traditions and family connections
  • Different ways of life
  • Celebrating diversity within our classroom

🎩 May 6 – SPIRIT DAY: Hats On for Mental Health Day
Students are encouraged to wear a hat or head covering to raise awareness about the importance of mental health.
