๐ Grade 2 Weekly Update ๐
This week in Grade 2 was full of learning, creativity, and connection across subjects!
๐ Literacy & Language Arts
Students worked hard during literacy stations, building independence and stamina. In whole-group lessons, we explored adjectives, synonyms and antonyms, and the elements of a story. We enjoyed our shared novel My Father’s Dragon and used it to deepen comprehension through discussion and journal responses. Phonics and word work continued through UFLI and Heggerty lessons, focusing on blending and sound awareness.
๐ข Math
We wrapped up our data and graphing unit by using real-world data collected from our community walk and Grade 5 buddies. Students created and interpreted tally charts, pictographs, bar graphs, and dot plots, showing their understanding through journal work and games.
๐ Social Studies
Our learning focused on Natural Resources and Industry across different Canadian regions, including the Appalachian Mountains, Cordillera, Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Lowlands, Hudson Bay Lowlands, and more. Students made connections between geography, resources, and how people live and work in these areas.
๐จ Art, Music & Gym
In Art, students explored primary and secondary colours by creating colour wheels and snowflake designs, and earlier in the week drew the Okotoks Erratic (Big Rock). Students stayed active and energized in Gym and Music, and enjoyed movement breaks throughout the day.
๐งก Indigenous Learning
On Friday, we participated in Indigenous Circle Friday, learning about the Indigenous peoples of Calgary, land acknowledgements, and enjoying stories such as Napi and the Bull Berries. Students reflected on story elements and cultural teachings through discussion and journaling.
๐ Community & Classroom Life
We continued our Totes About Me sharing, which helps build confidence, community, and speaking skills. Students also practiced classroom routines, responsibility, and teamwork each day.
Thank you for your continued support at home—we loved seeing the students’ curiosity and growth this week!
