Dear Grade 2 Families,

We had a wonderful week of learning in Grade 2! Students explored fractions, continued developing their writing skills, designed zoo enclosures, and learned more about the world through our About Me Bin. It has been exciting to see students applying their creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration skills as we approach the end of the school year.


๐Ÿ“š Language Arts

This week, students:

  • ✍️ Learned about and wrote Cinquain Poems
  • ๐Ÿฃ Planned and wrote All About Chicks informational writing pieces
  • ๐Ÿ“– Participated in Literacy Stations and UFLI reading lessons
  • ๐Ÿ“š Continued enjoying our class read-aloud, The Wild Robot

๐Ÿ”ข Math – Fractions

In Math, students:

  • ๐Ÿ• Learned about halves and fourths
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Used paper folding activities to explore equal parts
  • ๐Ÿ” Participated in a Fractions Scavenger Hunt
  • ➗ Learned the meaning of numerator and denominator
  • ๐Ÿง  Compared fractions and discussed which fractions are larger or smaller

๐Ÿงช Science – Zoo Enclosure Project

Students continued planning and designing their zoo enclosures by:

  • ๐Ÿ“ Choosing an animal
  • ๐ŸŽจ Drafting enclosure designs
  • ๐Ÿ—️ Selecting materials
  • ๐Ÿ”จ Beginning construction of their enclosures````

About Me Bin – Norway

Our About Me Bin journey took us to Norway this week! Students learned about Norwegian culture, traditions, geography, and family connections while continuing to celebrate the diversity that makes our classroom community so special.

Students will participate in fun outdoor activities. A Mr. Freeze freezie will be provided. If you do not want your child to have a freezie, please email me before Play Day and send an alternate snack. Students will be participating in a variety of fun outdoor activities throughout the day. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and wears comfortable shoes suitable for running and playing. Students should also bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the activities. We are looking forward to a fun-filled day!

๐ŸŽฌ June 25 – PJ and Movie Day
Students are welcome to wear their pajamas and enjoy a special movie day with their classmates.

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We have another exciting week of learning ahead in Grade 2! Students will continue exploring poetry, investigating materials and objects, learning about 2D and 3D shapes, and beginning an exciting new zoo enclosure project.


๐Ÿ“š Language Arts – Poetry

This week, students will continue exploring different forms of poetry, including:

  • ๐Ÿ”ค Acrostic Poems
  • ๐Ÿƒ Haiku Poems

Students will learn how poets carefully choose words to express ideas, feelings, and images. We will continue practicing writing our own poems and sharing them with classmates.


๐Ÿ”ข Math – Shapes and Fractions

In Math, students will:

  • ๐Ÿ”ท Learn about the attributes of 2D shapes
  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Explore and build 3D shapes
  • ๐Ÿง  Identify faces, edges, and vertices
  • ๐Ÿ• Be introduced to fractions and equal parts

Students will have opportunities to build, describe, and compare shapes using hands-on materials.


๐Ÿงช Science – Materials and Objects

Students will continue investigating materials and objects by exploring:

  • ๐ŸŒณ Wood
  • ๐Ÿฅค Plastic
  • ๐ŸชŸ Glass
  • ๐Ÿ”ฉ Metal

We will discuss where these materials come from, whether they are renewable or non-renewable, and what kinds of objects they can be used to make.

Students will also begin planning their Zoo Enclosure Project by researching an animal's habitat, diet, and needs. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ˜


๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ About Me Bin – South India

Our About Me Bin journey takes us to South India this week! Students will learn about the culture, traditions, foods, languages, and family connections that make this region unique while continuing to celebrate the diversity within our classroom community.

This week, students will be creating special cards to thank the many volunteers who have supported our classroom and school community throughout the year. We are so grateful for all of the time, care, and support our volunteers have provided.

Grade 2 Weekly Classroom Update -6.5.2026

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We had another exciting week of learning in Grade 2! Students explored different types of poetry, completed their frog research projects, investigated materials and objects, and continued developing their math skills through problem-solving activities.


๐Ÿ“š Language Arts – Poetry & Frog Research

This week, students explored several different types of poetry, including:

  • ๐ŸŒฟ Simile Poems

  • ๐Ÿ’ญ Metaphor Poems

  • ๐ŸŽจ Shape (Concrete) Poems

  • ๐Ÿ”ค Acrostic Poems

Students planned and created their own poems while learning how poets use words to create strong images and feelings. We also completed the final copies of our Frog Research Projects and celebrated all the hard work students put into their research and writing.


๐Ÿ”ข Math – Addition, Subtraction & Shapes

In Math, students:

  • ➕ Practiced decomposing double-digit addition problems

  • ➖ Practiced decomposing double-digit subtraction problems

  • ๐Ÿง  Solved word problems

  • ๐Ÿ”ท Explored the differences between 2D and 3D shapes

  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Learned about faces, edges, and vertices

Students showed great perseverance as they explained their mathematical thinking and explored new geometry concepts.


๐Ÿงช Science – Materials and Objects

Students investigated the properties of different materials and discussed how materials are chosen for specific purposes. We also continued learning about life cycles through a special egg candling observation, where students observed the development of a chick inside an egg. ๐Ÿฃ


๐ŸŒ Social Studies – Journal Reflections

Students reflected on their learning through Social Studies journal activities and continued making connections between classroom learning and the world around them.


๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ฐ About Me Bin – Hong Kong

Our About Me Bin journey took us to Hong Kong this week! Students learned about Hong Kong's culture, traditions, landmarks, and family connections while celebrating the diversity within our classroom community.

๐Ÿ  Practice Homework – Addition & Subtraction

To help students continue building confidence with their addition and subtraction strategies, I have posted some optional practice activities for home. These activities review the strategies we have been learning in class, including decomposing, number lines, hundreds charts, and stacking.
