๐ŸŒŸ Grade 2 Weekly Update ๐ŸŒŸ

Week of January 26

This week was packed with learning, creativity, and lots of math and literacy growth!

๐Ÿ“š Literacy & Language Arts
Students continued to enjoy our class novel My Father’s Dragon. We explored the elements of a story—characters, setting, and events—and reflected through discussions, journaling, and art. Students also worked on adjectives and descriptive writing, practicing how to make sentences more interesting. Literacy stations ran daily, helping students build reading, writing, and word-work skills, along with ongoing phonics learning through UFLI lessons.

๐Ÿ”ข Math
We wrapped up our graphing unit with hands-on activities and a “show what you know” task where students created and interpreted different types of graphs. Later in the week, we began our addition unit, introducing frequently used words in addition. Students practiced through math talks, drills, and independent work during Mindful Math.

๐ŸŒ Social Studies
Our learning focused on Natural Resources and Industry across Canada. Students learned about regions such as the Interior Plains and Canadian Shield, practiced note-taking, and began working on a Social Studies landscape project that connects geography, resources, and industry.

๐ŸŽจ Art
Creativity was front and centre as students created My Father’s Dragon–inspired artwork and continued working on social studies projects.

๐Ÿงก Classroom Community
We continued building classroom connections through Totes About Me, mindful moments, and collaborative work. Students practiced responsibility, independence, and pride in their learning each day.

Upcoming Field Trip: We will be going on a field trip to TELUS Spark Science Centre on March 31, 2026, from 9:09 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are hoping to have 5 parent volunteers join us as chaperones on the bus and during the trip. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know as soon as possible—we would greatly appreciate your support!

Thank you for your continued support—we loved seeing the students’ enthusiasm and effort this week!

๐ŸŒŸ Grade 2 Weekly Update ๐ŸŒŸ

This week in Grade 2 was full of learning, creativity, and connection across subjects!

๐Ÿ“š Literacy & Language Arts
Students worked hard during literacy stations, building independence and stamina. In whole-group lessons, we explored adjectives, synonyms and antonyms, and the elements of a story. We enjoyed our shared novel My Father’s Dragon and used it to deepen comprehension through discussion and journal responses. Phonics and word work continued through UFLI and Heggerty lessons, focusing on blending and sound awareness.

๐Ÿ”ข Math
We wrapped up our data and graphing unit by using real-world data collected from our community walk and Grade 5 buddies. Students created and interpreted tally charts, pictographs, bar graphs, and dot plots, showing their understanding through journal work and games.

๐ŸŒ Social Studies
Our learning focused on Natural Resources and Industry across different Canadian regions, including the Appalachian Mountains, Cordillera, Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Lowlands, Hudson Bay Lowlands, and more. Students made connections between geography, resources, and how people live and work in these areas.

๐ŸŽจ Art, Music & Gym
In Art, students explored primary and secondary colours by creating colour wheels and snowflake designs, and earlier in the week drew the Okotoks Erratic (Big Rock). Students stayed active and energized in Gym and Music, and enjoyed movement breaks throughout the day.

๐Ÿงก Indigenous Learning
On Friday, we participated in Indigenous Circle Friday, learning about the Indigenous peoples of Calgary, land acknowledgements, and enjoying stories such as Napi and the Bull Berries. Students reflected on story elements and cultural teachings through discussion and journaling.

๐ŸŽ’ Community & Classroom Life
We continued our Totes About Me sharing, which helps build confidence, community, and speaking skills. Students also practiced classroom routines, responsibility, and teamwork each day.

Thank you for your continued support at home—we loved seeing the students’ curiosity and growth this week!

Grade 2 Weekly Update

Math
This week, students explored data and statistics in meaningful and hands-on ways. We worked with our Grade 5 buddies to collect survey data, then represented our findings using tally charts, pictographs, line/dot graphs, and bar graphs. Students also practiced reading and interpreting graphs through games and journal activities. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explained their thinking using data!

Language Arts (Reading & Writing)
In literacy, students rotated through activities that supported reading, word work, and writing skills. We also worked on sequencing by identifying the beginning, middle, and end of the story Napi and the Rock.

Indigenous Education / Social Studies
During Indigenous Circle Friday, we learned about the Indigenous Peoples of Calgary, land acknowledgement, and the importance of respecting the land. We read Napi and the Rock by Jason Eaglespeaker, listened to a Cree song (Waniska), and discussed key messages from the story. Students later connected this learning to literacy by sequencing the story events.

In Social Studies, we continued learning about natural resources and industries, exploring what industries are and the natural resources in the Arctic Region.

We also had an “About Me Bin” sharing circle, where a student led a show-and-tell about their favorite things, family, and country of origin, helping us celebrate our diverse classroom community.

Grade 2 Weekly Blog

Friday 9th, January, 2026

Today, in honor of the winter solstice, we watched a short clip about January Kisepisim (The Great Moon) and learned how Indigenous Peoples understood the world by carefully observing nature. We then went on a community walk where students documented the signs of winter they observed around us.

We also began learning about the elements of a story by reading Sneezy the Snowman and sequencing the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Classroom learning updates like this will be shared weekly on Fridays so families can stay connected to what we are learning in class.

Grade 2 Blog

 Hello families,

My name is Temi Oshokoya (Ms. T), and I’m so excited to be joining NLS Grade 2 community! I’m a relationship-driven teacher who loves creating a warm, inclusive classroom where every child feels welcome, valued, and ready to learn. I enjoy designing hands-on, meaningful learning experiences that connect literacy, math, and well-being across subjects. I believe learning should be engaging, joyful, and rooted in curiosity. Our class blog will also be updated regularly with student-written recaps of our day, so you can hear directly from your children about what they’re learning and enjoying. I can’t wait to get to know your children and learn together this year.
